Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about visiting Cappadocia, booking a tour, and travelling with us.
How large are Visit Cappadocia tour groups?
We cap our guided tours at a maximum of 12 people — and most departures run with fewer. Smaller groups mean better access to sites, more flexibility in the day, and a genuine connection with your guide.
Which sites does Visit Cappadocia cover on tour?
Core Cappadocia tours include the Göreme Open Air Museum (UNESCO), Derinkuyu Underground City, Ihlara Valley, Uçhisar Castle, Avanos pottery workshops, and the fairy chimney valleys. Extended itineraries also visit Göbekli Tepe (12,000 years old), Istanbul, Ephesus, Pamukkale, Mount Nemrut, and the Black Sea coast.
How long are the tours?
Itineraries range from 2-day Cappadocia-only tours up to our 23-day Grand Turkey Tour. The most popular packages are the 5–7 day Istanbul & Cappadocia combination and the 10–12 day Best of Turkey circuit.
Who leads the tours?
All tours are led personally or supervised by Fazli Karabacak, a Turkish-Australian guide with over 15 years of specialist experience in Cappadocia and Turkey's archaeological sites. Fazli holds a full Turkish Tourism Licence (TÜRSAB #7797) and was among the first guides to include Göbekli Tepe in tour programmes.
When is the best time to visit Cappadocia?
The best months for Cappadocia are April–June and September–November. Summers (July–August) are hot but popular for balloon flights. Winters can be cold and occasionally snowy, but snow-dusted fairy chimneys are spectacular and crowds are minimal. Hot air balloon flights operate year-round, weather permitting.
Are hot air balloon flights guaranteed?
Hot air balloon flights in Cappadocia operate only when weather conditions meet strict safety standards — wind speed below 36 km/h and acceptable visibility. Cancellation rates average around 30% in winter and under 10% in spring and autumn. If your flight is cancelled, operators offer a full refund or reschedule.
How do I get to Cappadocia?
The easiest way is to fly into Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV) airports, both with direct domestic connections from Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. Kayseri is about 75 km from Göreme. Overnight coaches from Istanbul take approximately 10–11 hours and are comfortable and inexpensive.
Can I visit Göbekli Tepe on a Visit Cappadocia tour?
Yes. Göbekli Tepe is a signature stop on several of our itineraries, including the 3-day Göbekli Tepe from Cappadocia tour and the longer multi-week packages. Situated near Şanlıurfa in southeastern Turkey, Göbekli Tepe is the world's oldest known monumental structure — built around 9500 BCE, predating Stonehenge by 7,000 years.
How deep are the underground cities in Cappadocia?
Derinkuyu, the deepest accessible underground city, descends approximately 85 metres below ground across 8 publicly accessible levels (of an estimated 18 total). It could shelter up to 20,000 people. Kaymaklı has 4 open levels and is closer to Göreme. Both date to the Hittite era and were expanded during Byzantine times.
Where do guests come from?
Our guests come primarily from Australia, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The Turkish-Australian connection at the heart of Visit Cappadocia means we understand exactly what English-speaking travellers expect — clear communication, punctuality, high standards, and genuine warmth.
Is Visit Cappadocia a licensed agency?
Yes. Visit Cappadocia holds a full Turkish Tourism Licence — TÜRSAB #7797. This means all guides, vehicles, and itineraries are legally compliant with Turkish tourism regulations. It is the equivalent of a travel agent licence in Australia or the UK.
What is the best cave hotel in Cappadocia?
The highest-rated cave hotels are concentrated in Göreme (best for first-time visitors), Uçhisar (best for panoramic views), and Ürgüp (best for boutique luxury). We recommend booking 2–3 months ahead for peak season (May, June, September, October). We can suggest and help arrange accommodation as part of any tour booking.
