Ihlara Valley

A 14-kilometre canyon carved by the Melendiz River, lined with hidden cave churches and Byzantine frescoes dating back over 1,000 years.

What is Ihlara Valley?

Ihlara Valley is a deep volcanic canyon in the southwest of Cappadocia, formed by the eruption of Mount Hasan and carved over millennia by the Melendiz River. With walls reaching up to 150 metres in height, the valley stretches 14 kilometres from Ihlara village to Selime — making it one of the deepest and longest canyons in Turkey.

What sets Ihlara apart from other Turkish canyons is its extraordinary concentration of rock-cut churches. Over 100 churches and monasteries were carved into the cliff walls between the 4th and 13th centuries by Byzantine monks who sought refuge in this remote, defendable gorge. Around a dozen of these churches are open to visitors and contain remarkably well-preserved frescoes.

The Cave Churches

Ağaçaltı Church (Daniel Pantanassa)

Perhaps the most impressive church in the valley, Ağaçaltı features a cruciform plan with vivid frescoes depicting the Ascension, the Annunciation, and Daniel in the Lions' Den. The style shows clear Eastern and even Sassanid influences, making it distinct from the strictly Byzantine churches in the Göreme valley.

Yılanlı Church (Snake Church)

Named after its fresco of a multi-headed serpent, this church contains scenes of sinners and the damned being punished — an unusual subject in Cappadocian art. It gives a fascinating insight into the medieval Christian imagination around judgement and the afterlife.

Kokar Church

A small but beautifully decorated church whose frescoes include scenes from the life of Christ. The Nativity and the Adoration of the Magi are particularly well-preserved and richly coloured.

The Hiking Trail

The most popular section of the hike begins at the Ihlara Valley viewpoint, where over 300 stone steps descend to the valley floor. From there, the flat riverside trail follows the Melendiz River through a lush, shady landscape of poplar and willow trees — a striking contrast to the arid terrain above.

Most visitors walk a 4–5km section from the valley entrance to Belisırma village, where riverside restaurants serve fresh trout and traditional gözleme. This section takes 2–3 hours including church visits and is suitable for most fitness levels.

The full 14km trail from Ihlara to Selime takes 5–6 hours and ends at the remarkable Selime Monastery — the largest rock-cut monastery in Cappadocia, which served as a filming location for Star Wars.

Selime Monastery

At the northern end of the valley, the Selime Monastery is a cathedral-sized complex carved into a massive rock formation. It includes a church with a vaulted ceiling tall enough to accommodate an early Christian congregation, along with kitchens, stables, and living quarters. The scale is genuinely astonishing for a rock-cut structure.

Practical Information

Ihlara Valley is located about 80km from Göreme and takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach by car. The valley is open daily from 8:00am to 7:00pm in summer and 8:00am to 5:00pm in winter. A single entrance ticket covers all churches.

Best time to visit: Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal for hiking. The valley floor is green and shaded, making it manageable even in summer, but midday heat on the 300 steps can be intense. Bring water, sunscreen, and wear proper walking shoes.

Duration: Allow a full half-day for the Ihlara to Belisırma section with church visits and lunch. A full-day excursion is recommended if you want to continue to Selime.

Why Visit with a Guide?

The churches in Ihlara are not well-signposted and many are easy to walk past without realising their significance. An expert guide knows exactly which churches to enter, can explain the unusual iconographic styles that differ from Göreme, and will share the geological story of how Mount Hasan created this landscape. Our guides also handle logistics — transport, picnic arrangements, and the best timing to avoid crowds.
